Peace Stupa of Zalaszántó

The Stupa is located on Világos Vár hill and, with a height of more than 30 meters, is one of the largest Stupas in Europe. The Stupa represents the Buddha’s spirit, wisdom and compassion and love for all living beings. The building was consecrated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on June 17, 1993.

Folly Arboretum - Lake Balaton's Garden of Eden

The Folly Arboretum is not only a collection of unique cedars and cypresses, it is also an ideal family recreation area. Its vast, natural, tree-shaded garden is a favourite with families and young children. The unique wooden playground promises fun and relaxation. The on-site restaurant offers a permanent fresh bistro menu and seasonal specials at weekends.

Thermal Lake of Hévíz

At the south-western end of Lake Balaton, in the western valley of the north-south facing hillside, lies the Thermal Lake of Hévíz, known since Roman times. The basic elements of Hévíz medicine are based on the lake, the medicinal water and the mud, which has been awarded the title of Hungaricum.

Castle of Sümeg

One of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in Hungary, which has survived relatively intact. If you want to visit it on foot, you’ll have to put on your hiking boots and climb up a steep hill, but you can always take a castle taxi.
Szigliget-var.jpg

Castle of Szigliget

An unmissable attraction on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, with interactive exhibitions and partially reconstructed buildings. The 750-year-old former end castle underwent a partial reconstruction in 2021. The exhibition area has been quadrupled, so you can not only see the daily life of the castle, but also what the former Balaton fleet’s skis looked like and how the soldiers were armed.
tatika-vara.jpg

Castle of Tátika

Tátika was one of the earliest private castles in Hungary, built before the Tatar invasion. In clear weather the neighbouring Castle of Rezi and (in the other direction) Castle of Sümeg can be seen. It is a half an hour’s walk from Zalaszántó on one of the high peaks of the Keszthely Hills. The castle, at an altitude of 412 metres, is a perfect excursion destination: from Zalaszántó, it can be reached by taking the north-eastern road to Sümeg, where you turn right and follow the blue sign.

The Castle of Rezi and the educational trail

On the dolomite ridge of the 418-metre-high Meleg Hill, on one of the most prominent rocky outcrops of the Keszthely Hills, stand the stone walls of the Árpád-era Castle of Rezi. It offers a magnificent view of the Zala countryside, and climbing up is just strenuous enough to avoid the cold on a chilly autumn day.

Tapolca Lake Cave

Perfect for romantic dates and family boating, the revamped Tapolca Lake Cave is also a great escape in bad weather. Interestingly, it is the only cave in the country that can be toured by boat, and the visitor centre offers an interactive experience for those who come to the cave.

Buffalo Reserve

Just a ten-minute drive from Lake Balaton, in Kápolnapuszta, a vast fenced area is dedicated to the tranquil life of the native Hungarian buffalo and the preservation of their genetic heritage. During our visit, we can study the large herds of buffalo from several vantage points: through binoculars, from a high pass and up close from behind a wire fence.
